Stopped Short.

This morning I woke up to find out that the shortstop the Mets should have traded for at the beginning of the year was traded...

...for the shortstop the team never should have let get away in the first place.

*sigh* Can someone remind me again what it is like to not have incompetent management who is under the thumb of cheapskate owners?

I'll never get both NY fanbases' Tulo-fetish. He's overpaid, injury prone and expensive (although the price the Jays paid in prospect capital was less than expected).

The Rockies swapped his long dumb contract for Reyes' shorter but equally dumb contract. That's really the important part. But of the Mets could have somehow got him for the same three b-level prospects, or even an stud and a couple lower level guys, it would be worth the injury risk, especially if he could hit behind Duda so he could see a fastball again. Poor Lucas hasn't seen a heater since May (and it shows in his stats).

Hoffman isn't really a b-level prospect (personally I think he's a stud who could be the next arm to sting the Jays). And people have been wondering whether or not Mets ownership was willing to take on Tulo's contract for eons (and the poetic speak was that they weren't) which was probably an important part of it.
That said the Mets probably inquired about Tulo but got prices they didn't want to pay (Wheeler? Matz?) like when they asked the D-Backs about Gregorius before the season began and were told to either give up Syndergaard or beat it.

And even if the Mets (or Yankees) got him how much could he have possibly done to help the team? Maybe sell a few jerseys or fool fans into thinking the team is for real before inevitably going on the DL and missing 6-8 weeks? Not trying to be a d-bag (a big one anyway) but I can't help but think that there are far better options out there for the Mets (and Yankees), for that price.

Yes, Hoffman is by far the prize of the haul, from everything I have read or seen. I wouldn't have given up Matz or Wheeler, but Michael Fuller and/or Rafael Montero? Definitely. Tulo is a risk-reward type acquisition and I think for the right price, it would have definitely been worth the risk for either team. Of course, being a Mets fan, I would have loved to have a long Polish name and a #2 on my blue and orange jersey, but that's me.

I'm not so sure it would've been that simple. The very fact that the Mets have been saying they're looking for an upgrade at SS and have always ended up playing Tejada gave the Rox some leverage. Unless the Mets were willing to take on Tulo's contract (which is debatable) I doubt the Mets could've been able to get a deal done with Fulmer/Montero. A Wheeler or Matz or maybe even Sundergaard would've had to have been in the Mets' package.

Well, it's all moot now. Besides, now we can see if they'll take some of those guys for CarGo.
